In his memoir, Waypoints: My Scottish Journey, he recalled feeling “betrayed” by the show’s creative team when it came to one particular scene as it went beyond what he was comfortable with, per Insider.  The scene in question depicted the sexual assault of Heughan’s character Jamie Fraser by Tobias Menzes’ Black Jack Randall. The creative team wanted him to strip down during the attack, and though the actor was under contract to film nude scenes, he believed going full frontal was unnecessary in this case.  “This wasn’t a moment where I felt that being naked would add to the horror of what Jamie undergoes in that castle dungeon as a form of punishment, subjugation, and humiliation,” he wrote. “I pushed back, reasoning that nudity sexualized a horrific experience for my character, and it sparked quite a debate." Heughan continued, “Creative conversations are a feature of all productions, good art is made by questioning the truth and we all want to get it right.”After some pushback from the actor, the Outlander creative team ended up agreeing to only show Heughan fully nude in the aftermath of the assault. Heughan believes that if the scene was done today “it would have been handled differently,” noting, “times have changed. The c— shot was unnecessary and did betray my trust in the creative team a bit. We don’t need to see the horror to imagine what the characters go through. Imagination is way more powerful.” The actor appeared on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast earlier this year where he spoke about bringing an intimacy coordinator onto the set. “It’s important that everyone is protected, but also we find a way to explore these scenes and actually maybe get something more out of them," he said.Season 7 of Outlander is officially underway, but a release date is yet to be announced.
