The Duke of Sussex spoke with Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes, which is being billed as his “first U.S. television interview to discuss his upcoming memoir.” During the “revealing interview,” Cooper told Harry, “One of the criticisms that you’ve received is that, well, okay fine, you wanna move to California, you wanna step back from the institutional role, why be so public? You say you tried to do this privately.” Harry replied, “And every single time I’ve tried to do it privately, there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife. You know, the family motto is ‘Never complain, never explain,’ but it’s just a motto.” Harry claimed that “through leaks, they will feed or have a conversation with the correspondent and that correspondent will literally be spoon-fed information and write the story, and at the bottom of it they will say that they’ve reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment, but the whole story is Buckingham Palace commenting.” He added, “So when we’re being told for the last six years we can’t put a statement out to protect you, but you do it for other members of the family, there becomes a point when silence is betrayal.” Harry not only discussed his memoir with Cooper, but also recounted “his childhood, the loss of his mother and life as the Duke of Sussex living in the UK and now in America,” per a press release. In addition to 60 Minutes, King Charles III’s youngest son also spoke with Tom Bradby for an exclusive UK interview for ITV. “It never needed to be this way. The leaking and the planting…” Harry said in a teaser for the 90-minute program, which was filmed in California. “I want a family, not an institution.” According to Harry, “they”—although it’s unclear who he is referring to—“feel as though it’s better to keep us somehow as the villains,” and that “they’ve shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile.” The Duke also admitted, “I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back.” Both of Harry’s interviews are set to air two days before Spare is released on Jan. 10.
