What Is a Ninja Foodi?

Ninja Foodi is actually a family of products from Shark Ninja, explains Yester Banuchyan, chef, CEO and founder of Cook On Monday. “The range includes countertop ovens, smart grills, food processors and even cookware,” she says. The most well-known, though, says Banuchyan, is the Ninja Foodi that combines a pressure cooker, slow cooker, air fryer, oven and more into one multipurpose device. Yep, the Ninja Foodi Smart XL Pressure Cooker Steam Fryer has a whopping 14 cooking functions, including pressure cook, steam and crisp, air fry, baking, roast, sous vide and slow cook. “The Ninja Foodi is one of the best kitchen tools you can have in your kitchen,” says Barry Schneider, owner of European Kitchen Center. “It’s a dynamic multi-functional cooking device; a slow cooker, pressure cooker, air fryer, oven and more.” Schneider adds that the Ninja Foodi is a versatile, space-saving product, making it an excellent option for smaller and starter kitchens where space is at a premium. Plus, there are tons of accessories you can add to a Ninja Foodi, which is a major perk. “Chefs and cooks no longer have to choose between any single food preparation method, especially with the diverse array of accessories that can transform how you use this product,” says Schneider.

Types of Ninja Foodi Accessories

Speaking of accessories, you’re probably wondering what types of Ninja Foodi accessories are available to take your cooking to the next level. For example, you can find non-stick cooking pans that help prevent sticking and make cleaning easy. There are also air fryer liners, which you can use to further prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup. “Some of the most exciting ones I’ve used are any pans that allow you to get creative with your cooking,” adds Paul Sidoriak, published cookbook author who runs the website Grilling Montana. “There are springform pans for making cheesecake inside the Foodi, muffin tins that are perfect for making everything from cupcakes to copycat Starbucks egg bites and baking pans that make a perfectly cooked macaroni and cheese or double chocolate brownie dessert.”

How to Use Ninja Foodi Accessories

Ninja Foodi accessories are pretty easy to use, but there are a few dos and don’ts to consider. We went to the pros to answer your most commonly-asked questions.

Can I put a Pyrex dish in my Ninja Foodi?

“Pyrex can be a great option as it is capable of withstanding high temperatures up to 425 degrees Fahrenheit,” explains Basit Ali, blogger, cook and kitchen designer with Kitchen Strategist. However, there are a few caveats to keep in mind: Samantha Lynn, owner of Everyday Family Cooking, notes that while you can use Pyrex dishes when using the air crisp function, they shouldn’t be used when pressure cooking or sauteing.

Can you put a glass dish in the Ninja Foodi?

“You should not place a glass dish in the Ninja Foodi while pressure cooking, but this is okay if it is an oven-safe bowl when using the air crisp or slow cooker function,” says Lynn. Ali explains that when it comes to cooking with glass or ceramic, it’s incredibly important to make sure the material is oven-safe. “Oven-safe glass is good enough to be used in Ninja Foodi but not necessarily for pressure cooking,” he says. “For pressure cooking, I would prefer not to use a glass dish as it may crack and ruin dinner.” Ali suggests checking the manufacturer’s instructions on any glass dish you’re thinking of using with your Ninja Foodi to make sure it’s safe to use.

What can you not put in Ninja Foodi?

“Think of your Ninja Foodi like an oven,” says Lynn. “You can’t put anything in there that would not go in your oven.” So items like plastic wrap, wax paper, plastic containers and other non-oven-safe pans shouldn’t be put in your Ninja Foodi, she explains. “When pressure cooking, you should only use stainless steel, steaming baskets, metal trivets and silicone inside,” adds Lynn.

Can you put silver foil in a Ninja Foodi?

“You can use aluminum foil in the Ninja Foodi when air frying and pressure cooking,” says Lynn. “It works well to cover certain dishes and helps with clean up when it comes to air frying.” There is a technique to using aluminum foil in a Ninja Foodi, though: “First, always put aluminum foil in the basket of the air fryer only,” says Ali. “Putting it on the bottom or sides of the air fryer can cause uneven cooking and even fires.” Second, acidic foods such as tomatoes, peppers and citrus can react with aluminum, so if you’re air-frying any of these foods, it’s best to use parchment paper or a bare basket rather than foil, Ali adds.
